The revised Planning Policy Statement (PPS) 9: Biodiversity and
Geological Conservation sets out how the Government expects the planning
system to support this vision and help secure the UK Biodiversity Action
Plan targets for species and habitat recovery. In particular PPS 9
highlights the role of Regional Spatial Strategies and Local Development Frameworks. By incorporating biodiversity into local and regional
decision-making, the planning system will have a role in helping meet
the Government's commitment made at the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit
to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010.
