The Eco-development Group (EDG) was set up in 2009 by the TCPA. The group consists of local authorities, key delivery bodies and other groups bringing forward eco-developments of different models and scales; from eco-towns and villages to urban regeneration and extension schemes. The group helps to develop their proposals, embed ambitious sustainability standards and encourage a sharing of knowledge and best practice between the different sites. Together the group is providing innovative local leadership for plans delivering over 36,000 new homes.
The organisations bringing forward pioneering eco-developments are East Hampshire District Council, Hampshire County Council, Cherwell District Council, Oxfordshire County Council, Broadland District Council, Cornwall Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Fareham Borough Council and Bournville Village Trust. The members of the EDG have developed expertise to deliver new eco-developments based on exchanges of information and ideas, seminars, workshops, study visits and newsletters. In light of the progress and the emergence of a wider spectrum of interest in eco-development, the TCPA is expanding the eligibility for membership to include other councils with the intention of developing significantly sized mixed-use eco-developments.
The objectives of the EDG are to:
Facilitate the exchange of information
To develop good practice
To identify and deliver on training needs
To organise seminars and workshops
To identify and implement European best practice
The TCPA has been working on the eco-towns programme since its inception in 2007. Our initial role was to produce a scoping report for the concept of eco-towns; following this we produced a series of eco-town advice worksheets for local authorities and developers on 11 planning related topics. The worksheets were developed through the Eco-towns Expert Group, which acted as an editorial board to the process. The TCPA also played a key role in formulating the standards included in the Eco-towns PPS.
