The TCPA are advising the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on the sustainability criteria for new Eco-Towns, announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in June 2007.
Eco-towns will be new settlements, rather than urban extensions, and are in addition to the existing pro-growth agenda - complimenting the Communities Plan and being incorporated into the Government's Growth Points Initiative. They will be a further step change in the quantity and quality of housing that is needed.
At this initial stage the TCPA are advising on the sustainability criteria for Eco-towns, providing practical advice to Government in the wake of politically stimulated growth. In scoping the preliminary criteria for Eco-towns the TCPA believe it is appropriate to start with an understanding of sustainability as a "three legged stool": in addition to environmental considerations, about which there has been growing interest and good practice, there are the less well understood but no less important aspects of social and economic sustainable development to consider.
TCPA members are invited to join our Zero Carbon Development Task Team, which is providing input into the TCPA's work in this area. For further information and to learn more about this exciting new initiative please contact Alex House
