This introductory session will provide an introduction to planning in England, including: 

  • The key structures and how they fit together
  • The key national polices and what they mean in practice
  • What an ideal local plan might look like
  • How neighbourhood planning fits in
  • How decisions are taken on planning applications

This two-hour course provides an introduction to the 'nuts and bolts' of the English planning system and provides updates on the key impacts of recent planning reforms. The training is run as an informal and interactive session which navigates peoples through the often bizarre complexity of the planning system.

Training will be provided by Dr Hugh Ellis, TCPA Policy Director. Light refreshments will be in included. 

Who should attend?

This course provides a useful introduction for anyone interested in planning. It is ideal for elected members or other practitioners in disciplines such as public health who want to engage more effectively with the planning process. This applies across all disciplines and may include local authority officers and elected members, infrastructure providers, government agency officials, developers, housing practitioners, private sector consultants, community organisers, neighbourhood forums, students, academics – all those with an interest in how planning works.
