SUMMARY:Planning for flood risk - training for officers
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the potential of the English planning system to manage the growing risk of flooding from rivers\, the sea\, ground water and surface water. It will cover both the local plan development and development management processes and look at the economic imperative to plan for flood risk\, in particular from an insurance perspective. The presentations and subsequent discussion will focus on what planning officers must do to ensure that planning decisions in their local area take full account of risk of flooding.   \n\n\n\nThis workshop is suited to planning officers working for English local authorities. Places are limited to allow participants to actively participate\, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop will take place on Zoom so make sure your IT department will allow the use of Zoom. DESCRIPTION:TCPA Webinar for Councillors  \n\n\n\nAcross the UK there is a chronic shortage of affordable housing\, and this housing crisis is damaging people’s life chances. At the same time\, much of the new housing being delivered is badly designed and in places which lack the basic social infrastructure needed to make healthy and vibrant communities.  \n\n\n\nHow can we meet the shared ambition to build the number of homes we need in places we can be proud of – places that will enhance people’s health and wellbeing and help resilience to climate change?  \n\n\n\nAs communities and councils\, we have a clear choice. Do we want people to live in soulless housing estates and – as has resulted from recent changes to permitted development rules – converted flats with no windows? Or do we want our legacy to be one of quality and inclusion in communities we can all be proud of?  \n\n\n\nThe Garden City development model – a proven way of funding\, creating and maintaining successful high-quality places is an important part of the portfolio of solutions required to achieve this.  Councils are required to consider opportunities for new settlements as they consider growth options\, and the Garden City Principles remain an important hook in national policy. SUMMARY:A Peaceful Path to Real Reform: Delivering non-sectarian housing in Belfast
DESCRIPTION:Negotiating conflict within and between communities is\, in many ways\, an everyday part of planning practice around the world. However\, for planners\, campaigners and communities in Belfast\, it takes on a more pressing\, life-and-death\, significance. \n\n\n\nBelfast’s history of sectarian violence continues to weigh heavily on its shoulders. With the continued segregation of large parts of the city\, the ‘interface zones’ between communities forming flashpoints\, and stark inequalities that persist twenty years into the\, still fragile\, peace process. \n\n\n\nHuman rights organisation\, Participation and Practice of Rights (PPR)\, has been lobbying for community-led housing in some of Belfast’s most deprived conflict areas. The Town and Country Planning Association is working with them to support a wider conversation about what a non-sectarian\, community-led housing initiative would look like for the city. \n\n\n\nIn this one-off event we will hear from PPR’s Marissa McMahon\, who will discuss their campaign\, what they are trying to achieve for the community\, and the challenges they face in a city which continues to struggle with deep sectarian divisions.  There will also be the opportunity for those attending to put their questions to Marissa as a Q&A during the session. \n\n\n\nTo read more about the campaign and the TCPA’s involvement\, you can read Hugh Ellis’ blog here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\, Marissa McMahon:\n\n\n\nMarissa currently works as an organiser with the Participation and Practice of Rights (a human rights-based organisation) in Belfast working on the ‘Build Homes Now’ campaign\, which aims to tackle systemic religious inequality in housing provision in the North of Ireland. \n\n\n\nMarissa has been involved in the campaign since 2009\, personally lobbying at both EU and UN level regarding catholic inequality in housing. She has studied housing inequalities with a focus on housing rights movements in South Africa\, North of Ireland and the USA using a rights-based approach. She has produced a website www.lessonsforchange.org as a resource for housing activists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a FREE event and will be held online (Zoom).
