New Towns and Garden Cities

The TCPA was instrumental in shaping the New Towns programme (1946 – 1970): the most ambitious town building programme ever undertaken in the United Kingdom.

Alongside legislation in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the New Towns Act 1946 led to the delivery of 32 New Towns across the UK. These towns are now home to around 2.8 million people.

The TCPA has been exploring the unique story of the New Towns – celebrating their opportunities and reflecting on their challenges – in order to learn for their future growth and renewal, and to inform the creation of new places.

Since our creation to promote the Garden City idea in 1899, the TCPA has recognised the role of new communities as part of a portfolio of solutions necessary to provide genuinely affordable homes in inclusive, healthy and climate resilient places. The Garden City model is relevant to development at all scales, in new and renewed communities. Our Garden City Principles provide a blueprint for creating thriving places in the 21st century.

We offer a programme of support, training and guidance for councils, communities, the private sector and anyone interested in creating better places.
