This webinar is aimed at planners in local authorities with coasts, estuaries or tidal rivers, and will focus on how spatial planning can account for coastal change and its management. This will include information on Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs), the National Coastal Erosion Risk Map (NCERM), the role of the revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), and the use of Coastal Change Management Areas (CCMAs). It will be of interest to those involved in both plan-making or development management.

This session will explore what the revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) means in practice and how it can support resilient development and facilitate adaptation in areas affected by coastal change. Attendees will gain an overview of the new policies and the evidence base that underpins them, including Shoreline Management Plans and the National Coastal Erosion Risk Map (NCERM).

The session will highlight how the updated planning framework can be used to review and update Local Plans, strengthen decision-making, support development in the most appropriate locations, plan for long-term adaptation, and encourage resilient, thriving coastal communities. It will also examine the role of Coastal Change Management Areas and how they can help authorities and communities manage change proactively.

The webinar is being delivered as part of a collaboration between the TCPA and the Environment Agency and is the first of two webinars on coastal planning being held.
