Raising the healthiest generation in history – report launch

Raising the healthiest generation in history: recommendations and an evidence review from the Levelling Up Committee inquiry into children, young people and the built environment

Today, Baroness Sally Hamwee, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), Playing Out, Fields in Trust, Tim Gill and Dinah Bornat will host a launch event for a new report, โ€˜Raising the healthiest generation in historyโ€™.

The event will take place between 15:30 and 17:00 in the Attlee and Reid Room, in the House of Lords. The afternoon will include remarks from key individuals involved in this work and a briefing on the report, followed by afternoon tea and cake.

About the report:

  • In November 2023, the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Select Committee (now re-established as the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Select Committee) launched an inquiry looking at how better planning, building and urban design in England could enhance the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
  • Over 130 organisations and individuals submitted written evidence, and the Committee heard three panels of oral evidence. However, the calling of a general election in May 2024 meant that the Committee were unable to conclude and publish recommendations to government.
  • This report seeks to fill the gap and summarises all the evidence, including all the questioning and debate by MPs, providing recommendations to Government and other decision-makers for creating places and spaces where children and young people can thrive.
  • Improving outcomes for children and young people should be a central, cross-cutting priority for the Government. Overwhelmingly the evidence submitted to and explored by the Committee highlighted the urgent need for change to better support children and young people to be healthier and happier.
